When Benjamin Pendleton trudged down West Middle Street to the Culp house late in the evening of Friday, July 3, well after Pickett’s Charge had been repelled but with Confederates still holding the town, Wes’s frantic little sister, Julia, rushed forward to answer the door. Fleming describes the exchange:

“Why, it’s Mr. Pendleton,” she said, “and you are in Wes’ company and Wes did not come back as he promised. Something has happened to him . . .” and she began to cry.

“Yes, Julia, Wes is dead. He was killed Thursday morning. The boys buried him where he fell and I will tell you how to find his grave, as I marked it,” and Pendleton left the saddened home after minutely describing the burial spot as he had taken pains to remember it.46
